rear ratios w123

I have a 1980 nonturbo cd. Am going to put a turbo engine and trans in it, might go with manual, but most likely auto. The engine and auto trans will be from a 1985 300d.. Does anyone know the different rear ratios for these years, also have an 83 turbo parts car I could take the rear out of. Any input on these years differences would be appreciated. I have to pull whatever Im going to use in the next few days, as these parts cars have to dissappear very soon.

All 240D- 3.69
76-81 300D/CD- 3.46
79-80 300TD- 3.46
81-84 300TD- 3.07
82-84 300D/CD- 3.07
79-84 300SD- 3.07
1985 300D/CD/TD/SD- 2.88

You will need the speedo out of a car matching the diff ratio you use, no matter the transmission. All the 240D, 300D/CD and 79-80/82-85 300TD use a mechanical speedo. All 300SD and 1981 300TD use electronic speedo.

I think that 82-84 300D/CD =3.07, and 85's are 2.88.

good post, though forced. thanks fer the info...

Yes.

If your 346 rear end is in good shape I would be interested in it.

3.46 is best with the manual. 3.07 and 2.88 are too high and will wear out the clutch prematurely.

How long did it take you to swap in the 3.46? I have one waiting for me to install.

In a shop with the right tools maybe two to three hours. Not too bad.

In a perfect world, yes, about 2-3 hours. I didn't have a good jack to lift it up and fight the axles at the same time...

junkyard. I think a 2.47 will be the best you can find- dont know off the top of my head which model, but search 2:47 sleeper, it will come.

'85 300Ds had a 2.88. If you like acceleration that is as low as I would go.

The 247 ratio came in 380 and 500 gassers....maybe the 560s too.

I like the 2:88 the most, its the slowest off the line but Ive gotten my car up to 105 before backing off the throttle, in my 84 I hit max rpm's at 93mph
