Unhappy SDL water pump

Welp, I think Karl's wasserpumpe is about to puke. Seems to make an awful racket at idle.

Any comments on how much swearing I'll be doing swapping it? Seems to be what, seven bolts only? Could it actually be easy?

Tricks/tips are welcome

are you sure its the pump? what kind of racket? Have you ruled out the tensioner shock or vacuum pump?

He replaced the tensioner this morning I believe. It sure did sound like it was coming from the water pump, and it was a high pitched bearing squeal!! It sounded as if it was either water pump or alt, but the noise was really up higher sounding. Also I think the alt is fairly new, although that doesn't of course rule it out.
Hopefully he can remove the serp. belt and will be able to "feel" which component is failing. It ain't a pretty noise.......

The whole tensioner, or the shock? Could it be the tensioner pulley? If it is the pump, you will be pulling the radiator, the tensioner, and fan. I think you can get away without pulling anything else. Iv'e done 2 on 603's so far, but neither were squealing.

Ive been working on the upgrade to the 72mm metal impeller for my 124.133. I got it installed, so Ill let you know how it works out. It requires a different housing and some machining work.

Yeah I installed an updated pump long ago. Shock is new, as is tensioner, tensioner arm, alt, new Conti belt, etc. Just not the water pump.

If it's the pump, so be it.

It's not a tapping sound, it's a bearing going.

Excellent! It sure as heck sounded like the water pump. I'm guessing it felt fairly horrible when the belt was removed?

Not as bad as I thought, but still could feel some bind.

My water pump sounded like a bunch of cans being dragged behind a car. And when I removed it, it barely turned by hand. This was long ago, car only had 215k on it then. Wshew.

My dad's alternator was worse...it locked up and smoked the belts. It wouldn't budge an inch when we had it off, locked solid.

This looks like it'd been replaced at some point in the past... but I could find no marks of brand. Perhaps Hecho en Mexico or Taiwan?

Probably if it didn't last very long. I think the one I took off mine at 215k was the original. I used a Laso to replace it and its been fine ever since.
