bad trap oxidizer?

I have an 87 300sdl that won't go above 20 mph. I've changed the fuel filters and checked the alda. A diesel mechanic said it was probably the trap oxidizer. Will mercedes still stand behind this after 21 years? I understand there was a recall or an open campaine on these. Is there any documents to support me on this when I call the dealer? I have a feeling they won't want to cooperate.

Some say yes, some have had good luck, The only dealer in my area was less than helpful. (on my 85)
If you have more than one dealer, I would start calling and see if you can get a positive response.

There's an open recall on the original trap oxidizer. I haven't heard of MB refusing to remove the trap. In some cases MB replaces the turbo even if the owner doesn't complain of poor performance.

There's probably a limited warranty on the oxidation catalyst that replaces the trap oxidizer under the recall. If MB won't replace the cat, you can replace it with a straight pipe and classify your driving as 'for diagnostic and off-road purposes only' for the remainder of your car's life

There's a plug on the #1 exhaust runner. Remove the plug and see if you pick up some performance. If so, it's probably a bad trap or cat, whichever you have.

Are you sure that you have the trap-ox? It is next to the engine on top, football-sized about.

Your lack of power could be many things, from a clogged fuel filter, to a blocked exhaust, or several issues with fuel delivery. please keep us posted

I've replace both fuel filters and checked for the cracked head problem. i can't get the rpm's past 2000. I even had a independent diesel mechanic look at it and he said he would start with the trap oxidizer. It is the football shaped device right next to the engine.

This will be the only time you'll hear me say this - forget the independent! Take your car to an MB dealership and have them check for the trap oxidizer recall. If you qualify, and there's no reason you wouldn't*, you'll get a new exhaust system on the house. Possibly a new turbo too.

* = might not qualify if you have a Canadian or gray market car.

Sixto is right. All USA-version 1987 300D Turbo OM603 W124 Sedans, coupes, and T-sedans still have an open recall to have the trap oxidizer removed and replaced by a straight pipe. They also install a catalyst downstream of the turbo and any other needed exhaust components. if the turbo is damaged, they replace it too. In our case, we got a new turbo and a complete new exhaust system from the exhaust manifold to the tailpipe. Free. See a dealer.

There were no coupes. Only the 300D/TD/SDL

Thumbs down TRAP OXIDIZER - STAY AWAY FROM EURO MOTORCARS BETHESDA MD

I own a 1987 300SDL it had the factory "football" Trap Oxidizer on it. I had to fight with Euro Motorcars Bethesda MD to replace it " Properly" . They wanted to only replace by pass pipe up top....that was 50% of the recall. I asked why and thay stated that a NON FACTORY down pipe had been installed at some point in time. SO WHAT !!! FIX IT ! I had to get Mercedes Benz in NJ and the EPA involved BEFORE they would agree to finish the recall on a second visit. Euro Motocars then down graded me to a Honda Loaner car instead of the 2009 E350 they gave me at first ! A#$%%%%%.

STAY AWAY FROM EURO MOTORCARS BETHESDA MD My car was TOO OLD FOR THEM !!!

This is true for any new car dealer when you present them with a 23 year old car.......

"Old" to a new car dealer is 3+ years old and/or over 50K miles....

Depends on the dealer. Mine (Smothers European, Santa Rosa, Cal.) is happy to work on old Mercedes. hey have a couple of cars from the 1970s in their shop now as well as my '87 sunroof problem.

Trap Ox replacement should be a no-brainer. Since it's a factory recall, Daimler-Benz pays for everything, easy money for the dealer.

Because the Trap Oxidizer recall has been in place since not long after these cars were delivered new, I was shocked to see this thread and find that there's actually a car left with it still in place.

Maybe this is the last one left in the world! If so, maybe it has value! Maybe they will give you a new car for it, so they can put this rarest of rare MB's in the museum in Stuttgart!?............. Naaaw.........
