Its an I6 out of a 300SL, or "Gullwing". Notice the fuel injection system, looks very familer doesn't it?

MB always is years ahead of everyone else.

Kind of like an ME109 V12 cut in half...

There was a nice 1967 250SE in the junkyards last week that has a gasoline injection pump.

Anybody know how such an engine regulated its f/a ratio? Without any electronics, and without any airflow metering, this seems like no small task.

Clearly, by the sound of the idle, it wasn't done to perfection.

Alfa

I had a '71 Alfa spider that had direct gas injection. It seemed to be bulletproof also. I never had a single problem with it.

It probably had the throttle and pump lever tied together then the governor was tuned to determine the fine a/f ratio.

The description makes me think that was one of, if not the first, start after a rebuild. It probably didn't have a chance to seat everything yet.

Its also a 50's technology race engine, that may just be how it runs.

No they run a lot smoother, that was just the first start after a rebuild so its not going to run as good as it could.

If you read the comments it was sent to him to restore out of a 300SL, and should be back in that car.
