Some 123 Questions

Hey, I've got some questions about the new car.

First, is there a way to get the trunk to open without a key? My 116 doesn't have to have a key, just push in the lock and it pops. Can we do this with the 123 at all? Hands full of groceries don't favor a key needing lock.

Also, I'd like to covert the inside of the ashtry to two of the 12v plugs. When the ashtrya is closed it will look like the ashtray, but when you open it it will have two 12v plugs. Anyone done this?

Also, what are the specs on this car? Horsepower, etc.

I'm positive I'll have too many more over time.
The DS (12 yo dear son) is salivating over the thought of helping me do the work on this car. Can't wait.

Use the key to change the position of the key opening in the trunk lock. One position keeps it locked at all times, the other unlocks with the central locking system. I'd have to go look but I think you want horizontal.

Correct, horizontal to work with the central locking system. That is, if the central locking system is working.

As for specs, horsepower is 123 at something like 4000 rpm. Torque I forget the exact number but it's in the high 100's (I think). Your diff should be a 3.07.

Very important to know that horsepower.....
Trunk lock, if vacuum element is working, is unlocked at horizontal key position if car is unlocked. Locked if car is locked.
Turning key to right with keyway vertical locks the trunk regardless of door locks.
Turn key to left as far as possible {ccw}, then push key/lock in and lift trunk.

Your SD should have the 617.951 motor (same specs for the most part as the 617.952 mentioned above)

I think then in that case you do need the key. At least that's what I've been able to figure out on my car.

The morning after I got home, Tom was going to drive the new car to work.
I had two keys on the ring and he took one and couldn't figure out how to get the car started. Since it was 6AM and I've just driven 1900 miles and was asleep, he didn't wake me for more info.
He called me later and asked me why the car wouldn't start, couldn't get the ignition to turn. I told him he had the trunk key. He wasn't happy. . .I think he felt stupid.

It doesn't. There is a master key that works everything and a valet key that only works the doors and ignition switch. Unless the trunk lock was changed by a past owner.

That's why I was wondering. She said that the car would not start with the trunk key, but the valet key should start the car. The previous owner must have replaced the trunk lock.

Who knows. The key that was given to me for the trunk only opens the trunk, doesn't start the car.

I doubt it would cost much to get a VIN matched lock cylinder for the trunk so you can have one key for everything.

A matching key from MB costs $25, I doubt a trunk lock would be more than $50.

I respectfully disagree with Larry- the W116 has the OM617.950. In pre-1980 form it develops 110 HP. I think they were able to squeeze 10 more HP out of it in 1980 (different, harder camshaft), and then another 3HP when they went to the 617.951 and 952.
