Exhaust System 83 300D

The exhaust system in my sedan just broke off at the flange from the very front down pipe. That pipe looks pretty bad. I will need to replace at the very least, the down pipe from the exhaust manifold. Couple of questions. With the turbo, is this going to be a difficult job, maybe one I should leave to an exhaust shop? Since the work needs to be done should I just replace the entire system? How expensive is the exhaust system for these beasts? I kind of don't like exhaust system work since it's all on the back and I'm an old fart. I would mind tackling it as long as I won't need torches etc to get it out.

Anyone know where I can find a diagram of the entire exhaust system?

Any and all advice greatly appreciated.

The exhaust system consists of three pieces- the engine pipe, the intermediate pipe with resonator, and the rear muffler. When I did my '83, which had a broken bellows on the engine pipe, removal was very easy. I applied some WD40 to the three nuts, broke them loose, and spun them off with my fingers. The intermediate pipe was still good, but the muffler had started to rust through on top, so I replaced all three pieces. The cost from World Pac several years ago was about $300, but you might want to check with Fastlane to get current pricing. This is the easiest exhaust system you'll ever do.

It is an easy r/r BUT only if you have the exact system to replace it with. I just did another one last week.

But, if you start monkeying (backyard type exhaust stuff), then it can be frustrating.

I had a complete system so it was easy.

Very easy.

It is very easy to remove and install the standard exhaust. I think an hour to pull and about the same to put back on. Get the car up on good ramps and jack stands, so that you have some room to work. To bad your not close because I have an extra hanging on the wall of the garage. I see no way of shipping the thing.

The older I get, the less I like exhaust and front end work.

The down pipe bolts to the turbo, not a big deal.

If the other end is a flanged connection, it will just be a plug and play. If it's a slip joint it's going to be a job.

Also need to get the car up in the air for clearance.

FWIW, if you decide to have a shop do the work I highly recommend Jim's Custom Exhaust on Rt2 just North of the rt138 intersection in West Kingston. They can do stock or custom work and are usually reasonable. They replaced the rear muffler in my 300D to get it to pass inspection. Not MB parts, a straight through Magnaflow, painted black with turndown tip. I've been to the ER twice with rust/metal chunks in my eyes. I don't do exhaust anymore. RT
