K2 Spring Kit

I have an 1983 300 DT. I am getting ready to install a K2 spring kit. I have the hard 1-2 shift and flaired 3-4 shift. I have had a couple of stacked shifts. but that is unusual. Does anyone know whether I should install the springs for a stacked shift. Or should I go ahead and install it anyway. I would prefer not to have to do it twice.

Thanks

It seems like you have a modulator that is not working, or there is no vacuum getting to the modulator. Have you checked this yet?

do a search, there is a very comprehensive post on trans problems. there are a lot of system corrections you can make before you tear into your valve body. vacuum profile, modulator settings and bowden cable settings could be explored before taking the trans apart If youve already done all of this you are in the same boat as me, i will be putting in the superior kit this weekend. I am going to put in all of the corrections. this makes all of the shifts react basically the same as the 1-2 shift so you can tune firmness on all 3 shifts with the modulator setting.

The hard 1-2 is pretty standard, the flair 3-4 is not unusual @ 200k, from what I've read the stronger springs may help the 3-4 flair.

I paid $61 incl shipping for my Superior spring kit, I havn't had a chance to install it yet but I will post when I do.

nash,

If you have a flare, then your modulator is probably working. But, I think it would be well worth your time to go through the transmission vacuum system with a fine tooth comb before making valve body adjustments.

You need to make sure your VCV is set correctly, your bowden cable set shifts points are OK, and your internal modulator pressure is good.

You may still need to make valve body internal adjustments with the shift kit, but youll know which ones to make. After making some adjustments the symptoms could change.

There is a lot of info in a thread titles 'It's critical...' started by Sam Ross. In that thread Brian Carlton walks me through testing my vacuum system.

I also have written an article for the Wiki on testing modulator working pressure.

Good luck,
dd
