oil pressure gauge making strange sounds

Today I noticed while idling in traffic the oil pressure gauge needle vibrating and making a vibrating noise. Pressure was good otherwise giving full pressure when driven and going down about half way at idle.

Its a physically connected oil gauge (tube to the engine) so I would pull the cluster out and make sure its not leaking! If its doing that you either need a new line or new gauge, as it may be on its way out.

You did check the oil level in the engine etc too right?

There was a long thread on this symptom in the past. I believe someone found a small insert and perhaps even a TSB describing how the insert stops the vibration. Lots of people on the forum have experienced it.

I was at the junk yard recently and they had 2 each 1982 300SDs. Both had electric oil pressure sending units. If this is what you have the wire to the sender could be loose, breaking in two from vibration or the sending unit could be going bad.

I'm thinking the 116 SD's had mechanical gauges?? I'm too lazy to go outside and check. The fix I mentioned only applies to mechanical gauges.

I am not sure they have electric gauges myself as the ones I saw in the junk yard were the same model but not the same year as his car. But mechanical or electric he or anyone else looking at this thread have some ideas to work with.

I just checked mine. It's a mechanical gauge. So either live with the vibration or install the insert that was described in the earlier thread on the topic.
With mine, it only does it after driving for a long time at sustained high speeds so I haven't bothered getting the insert. I believe the earlier thread has the part number in a post.

Several guys ordered those restrictors for this problem, but nobody ever followed through and posted their results. It would be kind of nice to know if it works or not.

Just got through reading the old thread. I would agree that it only happens at higher operating temps. And what a relief that it is not major.

Kerry thanks for the link!

Is the consensus the pointed end points away out from the gauge?
