Could I loop the fuel return line back into the feed line before the lift pump? Does the return fuel carry air back to the tank?

Also, the diesel would eventually get hot if you loop the return and it would lose all of its lubricating goodness. What are you trying to do?

How did you set up the glow plug heater?
