Window sticker on my '87 300D: $43,125. My '91 300TE 4matic was a tick over $74,000 new, the most optioned Eclass my dealer had ever sold. Later when the 4matic was re-designed and re-introduced in (I believe) '97, the sticker was again around $74,000. I didn't like the new 4matic system so I didn't trade, in fact I sold the car shortly after as it had become problematic.

The big change is that Mercedes-Benz was through the early '80s run by Engineers, and through the mid-'90s the vehicles were priced using a "cost-plus-margin" formula. The Engineers designed and built what they felt the car should be, then they calculated the cost to build it, added a margin for profit, that was the sticker price. In the late '90s the current management decided to price and design the cars based on what the Marketing department felt would sell, which adjusted the prices significantly downward (along with the designs IMO).

i shot them an email about my origional window sticker as well...
i think the price of a 79 240D w/ no sunroof, 4 speed manual, & crank windows should be a nice price. the window sticker of our 300 SL was like 89XXX and change new in 91... and it doesn't have seat heat, or CD or anything cool like the new ones...

Well, China is an '80 240D optioned like mentioned above and the original owner paid $16,600. This was a Euro delivery car and there was about an $800 buck charge for shipping it to Houston, but I can't remember if that was already included in the $16,600.
Remember, even back then nobody paid "sticker price"......

My 82 300D was sold to a Dr in vancouver for 33k plus change, on the other hnad my 81 280ce was sold to someone in my neighbourhood for 30 and change.

seems the prices were pretty closely matched back then between canada and the US. Now we pay waaay more for the same car. Example a fully configures s5504m on mbusa site costs 115k, on our canadian site 148300 for an identical model. Same goes for pretty much all the models. We get screwed by the dealers here.

Last time I checked brokerage fees were not 33000 dollars on an s class

1983 300SD sold for about $42,500 new
1986 300SDL sold for about 66,800 new.

Don't remember the exact numbers and can't find the papers. And I don't have their options lists.

Regards

Run-Em

I've bought a number of MB's new: Here's what I paid for a couple of them - 1978 300D $21,253 (AC, sunroof, etc); 1984 300CD $36,663 (loaded, but the only option was the alarm system - leather, sunroof, AC, etc were all standard)

Paper work that came with my 1984 500SEC included the laminated window sticker. First purchased in April 21,1984 in Bend Oregon for $57,850. $750 of that price was a gas guzzler tax.

Second owner paid $22,000 for it in June 1992. Third owner paid $16,400 in June 2004. And I paid $7161 before taxes and registration for it in January 2006.

As was pointed out earlier, some states list the MSRP of the car on the registration and will base the ad valorum tax on MSRP minus a formula for depreciation. Nevada is one of those states, and the MSRP for my '83 was $30,973. My '77 was $11,756. In comparison, I was degarbaging a '79 Ford Courier yesterday, and the registration was still in it, MSRP $2,900.

this is from the online NADA guide. www.nadaguides.com under classic luxury. See it lists the original MSRP also. not bad for a 85 300sd

PRICING

Original MSRP: $39,500 Low Retail Average Retail Value High Retail
Base Price $5,700 $8,700 $11,800
TOTAL PRICE $5,700 $8,700 $11,800

(*) Average retail price represents a clean vehicle in good condition with a Clean Title History

My broker paid a tick over $30k for her 1986 SDL in 1988. After driving it for 20 years and 200k miles it works out to be a damn good deal!

I looked at a 560SEL for sale today. It had the window sticker (repro I assume) with the original price of 58,350 of which 1,500 was gas guzzler tax. The guy's asking $3500 for it now.
