Yes, it's funny, now I do recall the SEC being the absolute most expensive car they made. The joke was you'd probably have to be under investigation by the S.E.C. to be able to afford an SEC.

Time for a reality check...

In all of this sticker price discussion I haven't seen any specific mention of what the buyer actually paid. My '85 300D, for example, had a sticker price around $30,000 (I don't have the sticker) but, because the W124 cars were on their way -- and some customers knew it -- they tended to be discounted, especially as the model year wore on into 1986 with no new cars for the dealer to sell. I'm sure it's the same today.

subjective vs objective...

When looking at data, there is subjective and objective.
MSRP is objective, actual amount is subjective.

Obviously, there is going to be a distribution on the actual amount.
MSRP only takes into account the maroney sticker base price.

Not included are any options, shipping charges, sales tax, title fee, or dealer pack and jack (otherwise known as pin stripes, undercoating and seat protection).

If the circumstance is right, it's possible to buy the car below MSRP. It's also equally possible to buy the car above base MSRP when all factors are weighed.

this is from the online NADA guide. www.nadaguides.com under classic luxury. See it lists the original MSRP also. not bad for a 85 300sd

PRICING

Original MSRP: $39,500 Low Retail Average Retail Value High Retail
Base Price $5,700 $8,700 $11,800
TOTAL PRICE $5,700 $8,700 $11,800

(*) Average retail price represents a clean vehicle in good condition with a Clean Title History

My broker paid a tick over $30k for her 1986 SDL in 1988. After driving it for 20 years and 200k miles it works out to be a damn good deal!

I looked at a 560SEL for sale today. It had the window sticker (repro I assume) with the original price of 58,350 of which 1,500 was gas guzzler tax. The guy's asking $3500 for it now.
