Is there a way to find out what these cars sold for when they were new?
In the middle of a thread I'll see a number tossed around like 'this was a $30,000 car when it was new' and I'm sure there are folks who remember seeing certain cars for sale when they were new but car prices can vary pretty widely depending on model, year, and options. Does anyone know of a resource that lists what older Mercedes Benz cars cost when new? By older I mean the typical cars you see on this forum, 70's to early 90's.

I believe my 126 went for about $53,000 back in 1983.

If you own the car you can write to MBUSA and provide proof of ownership and they will send you a copy of the original window sticker. I did this for my '79 when some joker was trying to say a W116 300SD sold for $40,000 new (it was really under $30K) and having the sticker shut him up.

That sounds way too high to me. The SLs were not even that much back then, before runaway inflation of the 80s. I'd guess it was closer to mid-high $30Ks.

If that's the case, what would that be in 2008 dollars?

The reason for my initial post
So you can see why I was curious to find out the actual data? I'll get with the classic center on my car but it would still be nice to find a reference. You guys are talking about almost $20K difference.

My 83 300D was about 30K new.. And if I recall correctly, there was an 82-83 300SD on Ebay several times - Icon Gold, 60-some odd thousand miles for over $20G's (been listed several times) that had a pic of the original window sticker - $52,000 and change if I recalled correctly.

The sticker for my 1987 300D came with the car. I believe it was around $67,000.

I vaguely remember a friend who bought a (240D?) Mercedes back in 1972 or 1973. I think she said he paid $7,000 for it. That was a lot of money back then. The car was new.

I have a copy of an ad for a 240D from 1983 that states the 240D cost in the whereabouts of $20,000. That's close to $42,500 in today's money. The 1983 240D was the equivalent of today's base C-class, so the equivalent base US spec MB today starts off at $32,425, nearly $10k less than the adjusted for 2008 price of the 1983. So, does that mean the 1983 240D was built better and to higher standards than the 2008 C300 because it cost $10k more? Or am I starting trouble between the owners of classics and current models?

The 560SL which was the top of the line was $10K less than that in those days...that car was in the high 30s to low 40s at the most.
