Strange Shifting Issue

Hi all-
Have a good condition 84 300dt, the transmission has been acting up in the following way:

It L, it doesn't shift
In S, it shifts once
In D, it shifts twice

Which means I'm reaching 3rd gear and no higher (or so I assume- my tach isn't working, but it has seriously high revs at 55-60).

I bought the car a month or so ago, and don't have occasion to take it on the highway all that often, and this week was when I first noticed. It seemed to cruise at 70 fine when I bought it. Fluid level seems fine (and clear, pink) despite a persistent small leak (just add a little fluid every week).

Any ideas? Thanks-

Forgot to mention, it does seem to stack shift from 2-3 very quickly at around 25mph. Fiddled with the bowden cable a bit, just seemed to change the revs at which it happens-

Maladjusted shift rod??? When you think it's in D, it thinks it's in S?

Huh... good question.

I don't know if that's the issue, as it still has 3 different manual selections, it's just they all stop a gear too short. How would I adjust the shift rod if that were the case?

Thanks for the input-

Try searching this forum for Trans-x using my name...
That is the first and cheapest thing I know to try..
can't hurt if it does not help ... which is not the case for some ' cures'...
and it should be less than $20 to try it...
be sure to read and follow the directions...and give it time to act...

Leathermang, thank you.

Dropped a couple cans of trans-x in there, and did a whole lot more fiddling with the bowden cable. Shifting perfectly!

I'll leave the trans-x in there a week more, then change the fluids- want to let it do it's varnish removing work.

The stuff has worked miracles on a couple of cars for me....
and the nice things are 1, a cheap thing to try first, 2 does no damage if it does not fix it...
