new car?

excuse my ignorance but i bought this 300d today and i noticed a bunch of differences from this one than my 79.
the one i bought is supposed to be similar to my 79 from all the flix i googled when i got home here is a cell phone flic of it. i think maybe it may be the euro model but i am not sure. it was an intact car for 200 dollars. i need to file a lost title as it was sitting on some ones property in the middle of the desert for some time i understand.
i am really just trying to identify more of the car to restore it since it only seems to have a little rust and a cracked dash. the engine was clean inside and out from a quick glance. if nothing else i can use some of the parts for my 79 so all and all it was not a loss.
thank you for any info you can give

That car is a W115 (76 or older), your 79 is a W123. It's a different chassis, the engine will be similar but most of the other parts will not be the same.

ok cool i did notice it was a 115. the gentle man i purchased it off said it was a 77. i was not sure due to the fact it looked kinda funny, thank you.
are there any good books that show you the differences in years and what specs were changed each year.
that works makes me want to fix it now just for that reason. i may have another one that is identical to my 79 color and all. not sure what year waiting to talk to the gentleman.

I thought all the '77 cars were W123s, but I'm not certain. There should be build date on the plate on the drivers door post.

This forum is a good source of info on both cars, I don't know of any specific references for the W115 300D, maybe someone else does.

the car is parked at my buddies house since i do not have the room to park it here. i will o take more flics tomorrow. well my buddy has a book on mustangs from 60s to the 80s that tells you what the changes took place in the chassis, engine torque, wheel base and all that. that was kinda what i was looking for but for mercedes diesel engines so i could read up and learn some more.
you are more than likely right n the date i will knwo soon enough my buddies brother works for mvd and is filing the lost title for me.
there was a sticker that said something about changing fluids with a hole punched out on a 4(the month i assume) and the year of 78 i dont know what that is all for or where it may have came from
were there common years the put the fuel tank cap in the back and only one mirror. the wipers also both fold up from the center.

Very cool , a w115 300D .

If the car is labeled on the trunk 240D 3.0 it is a 1975 and the first of the new 5 cyl diesel.
If it is labeled 300D then it will be a 1976 and the last of the w115 body shape.

In my book , it is definately a prime candidate for doing up and driving for the next 20yrs or so.

Great find.

edit , fuel tank cap in rear and wipers as described are w115 features, second wing mirror optional equip.

Only non US cars were labeled 240D 3.0.

Both 75 and 76 US versions were 300D.

there is 300d on the trunk so it is good to know that it would have been around in 76 and not 75.makes finding info through google harder i was reading a little about it last night after i found out it was a 76-75 car, for some reason the w123 pops up more while looking for it
what does distinguish a euro model from a us model.
thank you guys so much it helps to narrow down things when i look them up.
on another topic how much of a pain is it to put a turbo charger from an 84 617 engine on to a 79 non turbo 617 engine.

it's pretty easy. just pull a turbo block from another car, keep the intake and exhaust manifolds and the Injection pump too. swap them in moving all the parts that are specific to your body and you should be golden.
this is not simple though.
putting just the manifolds and turbo on there will do very bad things to your motor. you will not have enough cam, enough cooling of the pistons, enough fuel etc...

I understand that 1977 was a transition year between 115, and 123. That is obviously a 115. I will suggest against just adding a turbo, many things were different.

yeah the pic is a 115. i wanted to put the turbo on my 79 300d is there a to resolve the heating and lack of power issues. the only reason i ask is i can get one off from an 84 300d where just the engine is left basically.
the 115 i am trying to restore the way it is. i forgot the camera this morning when i went out there so i have only that crappy phone pic.
does any one know the best way to pull the pin behind the clamp on the ignition lock. its move a little bit seems to have a oblong shape it fits into.
couldnt see in the dash.
all the articles say remove instrument cluster.... pull pin.
i understand the key can unlock the housing but the key is in a burned down house pile right now.

trying to pull the ignitinion lock to replace it with a new one.
