WOW, Glow Plug miss it's tip?

I had the # 1 GP burned out, So I changed it out with a new one, I was shocked to see the tip on the old GP was missing, It looks as if it was sand blasted off, The only thing I can think of is I must have water in my fuel?
Does anyone have any ideas on this, I have never see this before!

1984 300SD.
