Can a 5 speed manual trans be mated to the 4 speed shifter/linkages?

If a 5 speed manual trans was to be installed into a W115 with an existing 4 speed manual, do the shifter rods and shifter assembly need to be modified and or is the 5 speed setup unique?

How common are these 5-speeds anyways? I was just on Wikipedia looking and the info on the W123 and saw that it came with that tranny, and would really like one in the SD. What kind of HP could these trannys take? Quite awhile ago Twizted sent me a PM about the 4-speed install on his SD and said it was near effortless, just extend the d-shaft and the pedal assy near bolted right in.

You have about the same odds as finding one of these.

They are quite rare. It looks like the rods might be made to work with changes but the shifter is unique to the five speed.

I'd assume if one were lucky enough to find one you'd take all accessory parts of course. This tranny would probably be mostly found in Europe then...?

They show up on ebay.de sometimes. You would have to REALLY want it though, with the exchange rate and shipping across the ocean.

If you look here this translates to $817.89 for the transmission.

BTW - Could you use a 5 speed linkages from a gasser? Like a 190E or etc?

I'm assuming here, but my guess would be yes. I've been looking at the different chassis models on Wikipedia and they all are listed as having a 5-speed as an option, and I don't think Benz would have multiple different tranny models. Therefore, I'd say all the linkages will be similar if not the same.

Would perhaps trying to use the shifter from a W201 do the job?

Attention to detail!

Pay close attention! The eBay.de auctions mentioned are for a tranny that would not fit a 61X engine! The tranny pictured is from a 230 gas car and it's starter hump is on the driver's side of the engine!

Another possible issue with the various model of the 717.4XX transmission is the speedometer connection. Trannies depending on the original application could have either a mechanical speedo cable on the driver's side of the tailstock or they could have an electronic pickup on the passenger side of the tailstock. I've had a couple and 123 installations both OM61X.XXX and M110.XXX have a speedo cable and a 126 installation, an 84 280SE had an electronic speedo pickup. The latter was installed into an 85 SD!

Failure to observe these details could lead to either a costly mistake or one more system addaptation exercise! Good Luck!

Is the pattern the same for a 190D?

I think so. The earlier 123 tranny with iron main case has fifth gear to the right and up and reverse to right and down.
