1983 300SD Injection Pump Removal

I have a freeze plug that has rusted out behind the injection pump. It appears that the only way to get to it is to remove the pump.
I was wondering if there is any way to lock or pin the pump so that I will
not have to retime the pump. I can mark the outside of the pump and the block but I need to also make sure the pump gear itself does not move so I can spline it up exactly the way it came out.
Also If you have any tips for removing and replacing the pump, I can sure use the help. I am going to try and start this weekend and see how it goes.
Thanks for your help.
Rodney

If your pump has this plug on the side there is a tool to lock it at begin
injection.
The tool:

There was an 82 SD at the junk yard that someone had removed the IP from. He removed the vacuum shutoff and loosend one of the oil cooler hoses (I believe it was the outer one). I am assuming this was done so that the pump had room to be moved backwards.
