External Fuse for A/C Compressor?

I was tracking down an electrical problem the other day related to why my stereo and A/C both decided to stop working in the same day. I replaced a blown stereo fuse (#4) and all is well with my music, but there's a little bit of a problem with the A/C compressor fuse.

The #8 fuse, which is supposed to control A/C compressor etc., is missing. The spot for it in the fusebox looks like the rear terminal for the fuse has been scraped or melted or burned off, and on the fuse identification card, it's crossed off and says "external fuse"

The A/C worked in this configuration for a good while but seems to have blown, so my question to you all is this: where's my fuse!

I've tried tracing wires and can't seem to find anything. I'm getting ready to rip my entire electrical system out and re-wire it for good measure, but that'd probably be far longer of a project than I'm good for anyway....

It may be called a ' superheat fuse' and be on the compressor body...
but that needs to be researched or confirmed by someone else.... I am going from memory.

Many of these vehicles suffer from too much current on the fuse for the a/c compressor and blower. M/B came out with a fix for the problem that included a separate cable and 30A fuse in a holder outside the fuse box. It's a proper modification and it's not cobbled up by the PO.

Finding it it a bit tricky. It will live behind the dash and below the fuse box. The leads for the cable will properly attach to the screws in the fuse box that are used for the old fuse.

Try to get under the dash and have a look around. You're looking for a cable that's screwed into the bottom of the box with a fuse holder in the middle of the cable. The fuse holder is a square plastic box.

If it is not the fuse which Brian refers to then also check to see if your compressor has this :

Noted, will check.

I'm glad it's not cobbled together by the PO :p
