Trans Doesn't Use 1st Gear
I've got an '83 240D, automatic 4 speed trans.
1st gear won't engage at all. I only get 2 shifts -- floor it off the line, gradually do it. Even moving the shift lever manually -- all the way to the stop, up to the next -- 1 shift. up to D, 1 more shift, then done. Ideas? edit: Vacuum orifice incorrectly installed was sending the wrong vacuum to the transmission. Ordering a new orifice and all should be well.

If the shifter is in L the tranny should start in 1st gear. Put it in L and then go back up to D and drive off it should start in 1st and then shift into 2nd very soon.
