Caliper Wear?

I'm changing my break pads and noticed this.
Notice the circular part that looks a bit uneven? Sorry for the blurry picture, but it looks as though a piece of the pad holder cracked off.
Any thoughts?

There is a metal plate that is supposed to sit there I believe.

A shim? The brake pads came with some, but there weren't any previously. Does it have the same purpose as anti-squeal paste?

You can find out why the pistons have that groove here:http://mb.auto.pl/wis/w123/CD01/Chassis/42-150.pdf

The front caliper pistons should have a heat shield. Nothing on the rear.

Alright, cool.
Glad I won't need rebuilt calipers.
Service manual said to replace them if rusted, but I think I'll live for now. I'm mainly replacing the master cylinder and figured I'd do the pads while I'm at it. Currently trying to get one of the damn metal fluid lines connected to the new MC.

Edit: Got it, just had to bend the line a bit.
