Best MPG to date doing Eisenhower Tunnel & Vail Pass, on cruise control!

I just drove to Glenwood Springs and back this weekend, and surprisingly it was my first trip up I-70 in this car. And it didn't skip a beat.

I set the cruise at speed limit, and it went up every hill without a hiccup and never needed to down shift. 65mph westbound and 65mph eastbound of Eisenhower Tunnel, no problem. I was very pleased. In fact, westbound, I kept wondering where the steep part of the hill was, and then I was at the tunnel.

And when I got back in to Boulder, I filled up and was surprised to see 31.5 MPG. Just when I was thinking of selling my baby because I never drive it, I want to drive it more. I treat this thing too much as a collectors car than it is.

Funny, now that I think of it, my old early 80's sentra got it's best mileage going over the pass and back as well. 44mpg in that sucker, but it was third gear floored for a lot of that uphill journey. Pretty strange. I always thought the uphill battle would eliminate any gains on the downhill "coast" one would gain. Newton is messing with my head...

Nice...I've taken my 300D over that stretch of highway a few times...I stayed in Breckenridge for a couple of days and I don't think the little benz really like that elevation too much. It was a little slow on the take off...

Thats a beautiful drive through that area. we have been through there twice a few years ago. we stayed at the keystone resort both times.

really amazing how they built the highway through the mountain side with out tearing up things and leaving it all looking natural.

we had our 85 300D turbo, cali. equiped trap oxidizer. etc.. what a dog it was up at that altitude, no get and go, even down hill. pretty bad when I got beat by a 61 VW down hill.

the second year we removed all the cali junk and changed it like a 83 is set up. A totaly different car, went like a Corvette. don`t remember the milage we got back then, but was an improvement after the change over.
