i've got alot of play in my steering on my 1980 300d

is caused by a worn out damper?

No that does not cause play in the steering.

Check all front end parts in the steering for play and then try adjusing the steering. The large allen head screw with the 19mm lock nut must be loostened and the allen screw must be turned anticlockwise until you feel the steering (with wheels straight ahead) begin to bind. then turn back in until it just frees and hold the screw stationary while you lock it back down.
