Ever see a car with some kicka$$ blowby? AND VAC PUMP Q

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwOAaTrxzk0

I took this video today while checking out someones 300cd (I just finished working on his 116 sd).

Poor guy, bought it in san fran. The PO told him he replaced all the filters and such. We were going over the car after this clip was shot he asked what about air filter, do i need one? We opened it up and it was GONE. No air filter. Poor guy drove the car from San Fransisco without an air filter, didnt even know it.

The vacuum pump is shot on the car. I told him I can rebuild it for him if he orders the kit. What kit is it, I know theres a later style pump and early style, one is a diaphram pump one is a piston pump. I know my 84 has a piston style pump. His looks a little diffrerent, is it the diaphram pump?

what does he need to order? http://catalog.worldpac.com/mercedesshop/sophio/wizard.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&cookieid=2CT05TC9L2CT05TJJA&year=1978&make=MB&model=300-CD-001&category=D&part=Vacuum+Pump+Repair+Kit&appEngines=_any
I see the check valves and the diaphram.

I came to the conclusion because his pump gives about 3 inches or mercury, with all orifices blocked and with the brake booster dc'ed and blocked off with a finger. I inspected the vacuum line and it is fine. Someone who has done this before needs to help me out, I told him id email him with the info on what to order. Thanks guys (and girls)

Let me guess, he bought it from a guy called GreenBenz?

I test drove another 240D yesterday with 294K and it's the first one I've seen that would blow the oil filler cap off the valve cover.
I talked the guy into keeping the car {long story} but he's gonna call me if he ever wants to sell. Nice British chap......

I once considered purchasing a TD with blowby about double that volume. It started and ran fine.

FI, he is a veggie guy. He has a lovecraft 79 sd I just did a valve adjustment on to try to get some power back. Luckily for me there was a difference. All his exhaust clearances were way to tight, his intake clearances were spot on though. I found it sort of strange...

He also has (had) a 82 300sd (another veg car, although no conversion just mixed) that I fixed the tranny in (filter, it would stumble when It shifted. I recommended a filter and he told me "yeah but your not supposed to change those!" I asked him where he learnt that and well, lovecraft forum .

He also has a 300gd (my dream-vehicle) that just had body work done and he wants me to hook up lights. How many other people get to work on 300gd's?

Ok so do the check valves in these pumpes go bad? Im thinking the diaphram kit, check valves, that black rectangular gasket and a vac. pump to engine block gasket. Nothing else on these vacuum pumpes?

You don't need to remove the pump from the engine to do this job. AFIK diaphragm and check valves are all you need to do.

Our 300D had all tight exhaust valves and mostly ok intakes as well. I think thats fairly common.

As for the lovecraft stuff.....pretty much everything they say or do or recommend doing to a car will destroy it in the end, its best to steer as far from them as possible.

does anyone know what causes the valves to go out of adjustment? I told him it was engine wear

Thats what it is. Wear on the valve face and valve seat.
