Oil recommendations 83-300sd
OK so it is almost time to fire up the OM617 before I but the cab back on the frame!!!
(see project little out dated: http://bb.bc4x4.com/showthread.php?t=123204) What oil should I run....????? Thinking Dino for a few drives until I get everything settled and then switch to synthetic (oil cooler and lines from another car (mine got broken by my motor pulling help?) Tried searching threads but no luck and I am sure this has been covered. Thanks for the help... Cheers David |

Search function.......
But hey, its annoying when people say that. Ill give you a good answer. Delo 400 15-40 Thats what I run. (Flame suit on) I personaly wouldnt use synthetic, if I could afford it. When they designed my engine they had dino oil in mind. Plus I have yet to find synthetic diesel motor oil (as in 15-40)

Definitely search, the best oil is only opinion.
I use Mobil Delvac 1, a real full synthetic. |

15W-40, no.
5W-40, yes and no. Its a "synthetic" oil, normal dino oil cracked to have properties similar to synthetic. |

Dino, but I also add two cans of MOA, just like the dealer does with a premium oil change. I also add the appropriate amount of Tuff Oil, an additive to help, similar to synthetic.

The best dino oils are Rotella, Delo 400, and Delvac 1400. For those who change oil every 3K, any of these oils are excellent.
The best synthetic oil is Mobil Delvac 1. A very good, and less costly synthetic alternative for those who change oil every 5K is Rotella 5W-40. |

If your in a colder climate than this, then go with a 5W40 until it warms up some. 5W40 is to thin though for normal summer driving with high temps. Flame suit on. Extensive research in fluid dynamics. |

I'll chime in with any CI-4 or CI-4 Plus oil.

As the others has said, a conventional 15W40 diesel oil or a synthetic 5W40 diesel oil (Rotella or Mobil 1). The synthetic is better for cold starts and you don't need/want anything heavier than xW40, regardless of ambient temperature.

Brian used few words and said it all !
I could write a few paragraphs on why I like Rotella dino - but why ? I would just be splitting hairs. Good Job, Brian.
