As the title summarizes I have recently completed two mods to my W115 240D OM616 engine. One was the addition of an oil separator/breather from a VW TDI (as suggested by a board member). I had to cut the inlet down to minimize the overall height or else the hood would hit it, but then it was just a matter of cutting a couple of short pieces of 3/4" heater hose and clamping it in. I wanted to see if I could reduce the engine's overall oil consumption which seems to be worse at highway speeds. I suspected a good bit of oil was going out the breather so this might help that. Total cost for the used part and the hardware - about $25. Nice thing about it is it is reversable if it does not fix it, I'll just put back the old rubber elbow.
The second was a fix for the bracket on the back of the IP which the cable from the gorilla knob is held by. These tend to separate where the rubber was molded to the bracket so I drilled through the rubber and front plate using the three holes on the bracket as a guide and added three 8-32 X 1" machine screws and nylon locknuts to it. It loses some rubber "bounciness" but it doesn't seem to make any difference in its functionality. A new replacement part from M-B is $70 so this fix is cheap and effective. No glue will hold that rubber to the bracket once it breaks, and when it does you lose the ability to shut off the engine from inside the car....this is the only fix I could think of that would be permanent. Total cost for this fix - negligible.
