1983 240d Turbo

I currently drive an 84' Mercedes 300sd, but I have run across an 83' Mercedes 240d Turbo Diesel. It is in excellent condition, but when I have searched the net I have found no mention of a legitimate 240d turbo. Was there such a car or am I wrong? The engine compartment is the mirror image of my 84 300sd. Is this a good car, is it even legit? Thanks.

It's not factory. Does it have a 4 cylinder or a 5 cylinder engine?

5 cylinder. It is the mirror image of my 84 300sd. I just can't gather any info verifying it as legit. The older gentleman that owns it states he bought it from California. How could it be possible for it to be a factory 240d turbo?

Could be a rebadged "sleeper" or someone put a 300 D Turbo engine into it later on.

The 240D is a 2.4L, 4 cylinder. The 5 cylinder turbo is a 3.0L engine (300D and 300SD). It appears someone replaced the engine, not an unusual modification to get more power.

I have seen a 240 delivered from the factory with a five cylinder in it. I thought at first it would be re badged but on reflexion it was the lower 240 trim.

The 1975 300D was sold in Europe as the 240D 3.0 but in the USA every car that came with the 5-cylinder was a 300D.

If it says 240D on the trunk and it has a 5-cylinder, either the engine was swapped or the badge was swapped.

Does it have the manual ac and heat controls? If it does its most likely a 240 d chassis. If its the automatic controls its most likely a 300d chassis.

If its a euro it could be a 300d na chassis with the simple heat controls like a us spec 240d.

If its the 240d chassis with a 300d turbo motor and a stick its the ultimate 240d combination, in many minds. I really like my 83 240 with a 300 euro diesle na motor though. its really smooth and torquey.

There was a difference in body trim? I never noticed that...what varies with it?

I too own one of these rare Cali 240D 5 cylinders.....home made of course...
Wish I had the turbo...but I have the stick!

On the W123s at least the 240Ds have a bit less chrome.

There is a chrome strip on the 300d under the taillight. On some the vent grills are chrome too but I'm not sure what models.

The chrome vent grills are through 1982.

Ahh yes, I've seen the blacked out taillight trim and vents vs chromed, I always thought it was just another package option. Silly me....

mb does no advertise those little details but if you look at enough of these things you notice them.

When I fixed the rear body damage on my 83 240/300 I installed the 300 trim under the taillights, just for fun.
