You'll overheat in traffic in hot weather. It cools the radiator. Depending on where you live, you can get away without a fan thru a good part of the year.

fan cools the water in radiator which cools the engine, via water in the cylinder head. No fan, you'll overheat, warp head, crack block, seize engine, buy another non turbo replacement....................get the part. Used is OK.

You could also end up with this problem as mentioned in this ad:
I have a Mercedes for sale that need some work but could be super cute once again.
The engine needs to be rebuilt and there is some body damage to the hood where the fan blade went through. She could also use a new paint job and a passenger window. The interior needs to be redone but overall she is a solid.Email me with all offers and if you would like pictures of her.

I agree that it needs to be replaced. The engine will heat up rapidly in traffic, even in moderate outside temperatures. Mine actually boiled over in traffic when my fan clutch failed (on a 70F day).
