Changing fluids--Tranny & rear end, recommendations?
I have a 1980 240 D, manual tranny, that is probably due for some maintenance. Can someone tell me what the capacity is of the transmission, and also the rear end? Also, what brand of fluid would you recommend?
thanks, Jim

A little less than 2qts each.
The rear end takes normal 80w-90 gear oil while the tranny takes ATF (or 15w40 oil if it has grinding problems). |

hypoid API GL-5 for the rear end(recommended viscosities SAE 85w-90 or straight 90)
Some people use MTF/MTL (SAE 80) in the manual trasmission, which is close to ATF ,or engine oil... There is a confusion on oil for 1981-on transmissions,as MB specifies 80W oil(made by Exxon-Mobil, Esso Gear oil MB 317 and sold at the dealer at twice the price)...MB 235.10 Another strange thing is that nowadays MB docs specify the obsolete ATF TASA than Dexron fluids.... 716.X trannies: http://www.lados.ru/lados/lados.nsf/ires/MKPP-oil/$File/BF26-P-1000-01C.pdf 716.X trannies (cont-d) http://www.lados.ru/lados/lados.nsf/ires/MKPP-oil/$File/BF26-N-1000-01G.pdf 717.4 : http://www.lados.ru/lados/lados.nsf/ires/MKPP-oil/$File/BF26-P-1000-01A.pdf Transmission 717.407/408/409: http://www.lados.ru/lados/lados.nsf/ires/MKPP-oil/$File/BF26-P-1000-01D.pdf |
