Machine Shops and Reputability (Oregon)

In the market for a bottom end rebuild and have found a reground crank already hardened, crack checked, etc..

How do shops cut corners? How can I guage their work or even trust what has been said to be done is done correctly? (ie.. nitride hardening on crank regrinds?)

Doesn't a machine do the actual grinding?

I am very new to this. I am not sure of what to look for. If someone has been in business for 30 years, he must be doing something right.?? right?

I have read that the regrinds should only be metric, but I have a lead on a standard cut and they make bearings for this.

Any leads on machine shops in Portland, OR?

I have had good experience with Dan Hall in NE Portland, near Killngsworth and Interstate and I have had the Napa shop on 9th and SE Morrison do a good job. Gary down at Napa is the one you would want to talk to. Check with MBI motors and see who they recommend for Mercs.

Good luck -

What did you have done by Dan Hall's? This is a shop that interests me, are you affiliated?

I am confused what kind of experience you get in machine shop. Like the member who are started these thread. However, try to get search in some online site by using a google search.

I am surprised to hear you need a crank grind. Have you had the journals micrometer checked? Normally only necessary following bad oil pump failure. If you need a crank grind, chances are there are other problems. I would be looking at a replacement motor.

Give MBI Motors in Portland a call. They are one of the most reputable Mercedes Shops in the Northwest. I'm sure they will have a suggestion for a place to send you machine work to.
