Interesting Article about Diesels future from NY Times

This was interesting enough to post here. Seeing how everyone is concerned with diesel prices. I love the part about disels being more efficient than a hybrid!

Along with this one posted here earlier!

Diesel more expensive than gasoline?

Notice the comment, “People will definitely get sticker shock at over $4 a gallon,” said Mike Omotoso, the powertrain analyst at J. D. Power. “But we see the huge price gap between gasoline and diesel as a relatively short-term spike.”

Let's hope so.

Sure it's a short-term spike -- gasoline's price will soon match diesel's on the high end. Diesel won't drop to match gasoline.

That's been my prognostication for the past few months. I suspect we're going to see gasoline prices go berserk over the next few months, while diesel goes up slowly ... the lines should eventually cross. Unfortunately it isn't going to be very pretty for anyone. But I think we'll eventually get the consolation prize of being able to say "our" fuel is less expensive.

Well, notice too that even with Diesel prices higher than gas, they are still saying that because of a diesel's better fuel economy, we are still saving more than those who have to buy gas!!!!

Diesel prices are expected to get comparable to gasoline because diesels are getting ready for their market share here in this country, mostly because a diesel vehicle will pay for itself and a hybrid will not!

Hybrid diesels getting 60 MPG or more will overrun hybrid gasoline vehicles in what could be the near future!

Yeah too bad you have to pay an extra 3 or 4 thousand to the manufacturer for the diesel. YOu still save in the long run but it takes a while.

As long as you don't have to trade in every year, what's the problem?

Nothing, you just have to keep in mind it will take a while for you to save money, just like a hybrid. Only diesels are a better deal because they wont be as bad to work on.

True! I think those that do trade in every other year or so are not real concerned with the envoronment or fuel prices, that's my opinion.

To me, any car will get better fuel economy if it isn't dragging a payment book behind it.

If you go to your local dealer and price out an E320CDI its no more expansive than any other E class. $1k is jack, heck Command is $2k, the sport package is $3k, 4matic is $3k. $1k is like what you will pay to get better paint, and maybe leather. I think that cool class roof is a $1k option.

Around here the CDI's are the cheap cars because the dealer stocks mostly 4matic cars. An E350 4matic with zero options will be a couple of grand more than a base E320CDI.

The diesel E's are the cheap ones, think mid to high 50k's. Load up an E550 and you are talking over $70k.

German cars will kill you with options, its all to easy to add $10k-$15k to the base price.
