Play in Throttle Linkage

Should there be play in the throttle linkage. My throttle linkage has about a 1/4 inch of play in it.

my buddy and me are trying to get his transmission to shift correctly, we are adjusting the vcv on a 1980 and having some sucess, but mostly it just shifts way too early. with no vaccum it shifts hard and late. I just cant help but feel that the throttle linkage is not right and that that may be affecting the shifting. you can put the pedal half way to the floor before it raises from idle, i once owned a non turbo and dont remember it being like that, my 85 certainly isnt. any links for setting up the rod lengths or any other linkage info.

My car has a spring in one of the rods that allows for the travel of the stop lever.
