Anyone know if I have to pull the engine to replace the upper cast oil pan
on an 617.951. If not what do I need to remove from the car to R & R the thing.

sigghh you do and you don't
i suggested that it could be done and got blown out of the water. Thats because the tranny bolts to that pan. Plus the engine cross member. But you know what, if you are clever ...i better not go there

Not that I have done it, but there are numerous threads stating the feasability to do so. Some have successfully and it depends on the 'why'? Since you are going to have to detach the engine and lift it rather high, possibly remove te valve cover and damage components... for what? And then manuever a 50-60 lb crank so you can clear the pan. The insight I got was..'Only if totally unnecessary to do so'.
Is there a good reason? |

You'll be 75% of the way to pulling the engine by the time you get room to pull the pan. Might as well go all the way.

thanks
The reason for replacement is due to an unfortunate incident with a large immovable boulder . My attempts to weld it up have resulted in a nice little trail of spots on the ground following me around. looks like she'll be getting a freshening in the process. What else should I do while the motor is out? I'm figuring I'll do a compression test to see if it needs to come apart for internal work. If everything looks good is it worth it to put a 260k mile engine back in?

I don't think so
Yet I know of some incredibly handy mechanics whom seem to be able to perform magic. But from my experience with the 617, I would say forget the hassle, pull the engine and transmission, do it on the floor or on a bench and get it all done just right and you will have no leaks and you will be very happy.
