Well, it's not a bad head gasket...

I finally got around to pulling the head on my 85 300TD euro, and the gasket was perfect... the head was not. from the exhaust valve face to the out side of the combustion chamber was a nice crack... I guess that TD head is shot. I wonder if I can pull the head off the 80 Parts car and swap over the valves and cam from it and install it on my euro?
Whaddya think guys and gals? are the PC's compatible from an 80 to an 85 block?

anybody want a core from a TD???

Does your '80 parts car have the SLS pump for the rear shocks?

yup. it's a TD also.
I pulled all the valves and the valve springs sit on bearings... kool! oh, and there are not any retainers holding the valves in. just the adjustment nuts... easiest set of valves I ever pulled off of a head!

the head castings are all the same I think, but I don't know if the N/A PC's are the same as the Turbo PC's... does anybody know? I will go ahead and pull the 80's head and see for myself... I do hate to tear down a good motor, but I NEED the head and I ain't paying 900+ for a metric rebuild of a turbo TD head...

If me, I would take the head to my favorite machinist and see if it is repairable. Most head cracks are weldable, I think.

Is this an accurate statement? Can most head cracks be repaired? Be interested to know.

... not unless the head is worth a VERY high amount. cast iron is VERY VERY VERY expensive to weld. like 6 or 700 to accomplish... very labor intensive and the kiln needed to do it is not available at many welding shopes... specialty stuff only. Ive had it done back in my drag racing days on a 2500.00 set of Lee Shepard heads... waaay back then it was nearly 500.00 per weld, and it took a week to accomplish it.

there is a reason that metric motors rejects any 617 heads with cracks in them as cores!!

Brazing is doable, but only if it's not in a high temp area... and mine is cracked in the exhaust port along the floor of the combustion chamber... as hot and destructive a locale as it gets...

Yep, maybe head cracks in aluminum, but not cast iron.

you simply have to use too much nickle to make the weld stick. and nickle is really touchy about heat. I wouldnt trust a weld on cast iron..
