I would seriously consider getting in touch with this guy:

http://www.jie.com/ ( there is also a parts diagram for your tranny there)

He will know what you are talking about wrt the seal. I would replace it while you are in there. Any MB parts counter guy SHOULD be able to look up the area you are talking about on the EPC and find the oring. Or you can look it up for yourself on the EPC and give the P/N to the MB parts guy to be sure you get what you need.

You'll need to replace that seal anyway. It's a ***** to get out - I had to use a small slide hammer with expandable grippers to get it out. The seal is a dealer item - don't think any of the vendors have it - $5-7.00. Just make sure you take your time and keep everything CLEAN! I would do the K-1 spring kit too while the pan is off - easy job. Good luck.

The clip nuts are available from the dealer. About $6 each I think...just checked last week.

How you get the old ones off if they're broken, I don't know.

i burned the bolt heads off and shoved the old crap into the body caviety. the seal that came from m.b. did not even look like the old seal and the old seal just pulled right out with my fingers. maybe i did not get the actual seal from m.b. but something that appeared to be like a white bushing with a flanged edge. it went in where the seal was, not really tight or anything. . . .

the car does have a hell of a shudder at about 20 mph but i can;t figure out where its coming from.
ran it on jack stands and looked at the drive shaft, rear axel and brake rotor and it just is not visible.
plus it has a rattle / vibration (not that terrible)that really does not change with speeds. humm, maybe that "seal" is the culprit ? ? ?
any ideas ?

The shudder might be the flex disks or the center bearing and carrier on the driveshaft. I had that problem on my '83 and just replaced everything I could on it. It's perfect now.

Depending on the type of shudder it could be out of balance tires, or a drive shaft issue. I had a shudder on my car as well until I replaced the flex discs, center carrier support and center bearing. The center support was completely trashed on my car. It is now completely smooth....I only have a minor vibration between 78 and 81mph.....but thats probably something else....and its pretty minor. (I am betting suspension related....)

Yup- I vote for the center support bearing. It may be hard to see how trashed it is until you replace it. May as well do the flex discs while you have it apart.

and i forgot

to all you guys that added information and answers to my questions, , , , ,

thank you very much.

the transmission works great now, the vibration ended up being the exhaust system that was poorly installed and was just kinda hanging on the body.

the valves finally got adjusted and now it needs only the little overflo lines that go between the injectors. ...

then its off to the front end shop for evaluation and more parts to replace and then, i may be comfortable driving it.

the air conditioning is not working but i think the heater is. i have not driven it enuf to tell yet. and a few more typical m.b. problems to tend to. . . '

im totally impressed. and fuel is down to only about 4.10 a gal too.

again, thanks for the help your a great group. . .
