would you? used transmission

My 84 300SD has cooked it's transmission. My mechanic says he can put in a used one for about 1K. would you do it or should i just sell the car for what i can get for it.

It's an 84 300SD w/ about 215K, navy with palomino. was a good daily driver, working a/c, working cruise, etc. because i always fixed what was broken.

I'd say, go for it.

At a $1000.00, is he supplying the transmission? Sounds pretty good to me. Changing that transmission is one mean job. Wouldn't think it too much out of line if he is not supplying the transmission. And if it is good lookin, good runnin older SD, and you must like it, why not go for it. What can you get now days for $1000?

What is the history of the used transmission? Not sure where you are located, but in the Seattle area, you can get a 722.3 rebuilt for $2000 with a warranty.

If everything else works on the car, I would keep it and have the transmission repaired or replaced.

I'm happy with the rebuilt tranny I got from Sun Valley Mercedes a couple of years ago for my 1980 300 TD, for $1050 plus $125 shipping. I installed it myself (rented a tranny jack for $35) and it's doing fine. I would generally prefer rebuilt to used. Steve

Go for it, the car is nice otherwise.

What the hell, that's only 2 or 3 car payments....

No I would get it rebuilt for $500 more. Thats throwing good money after bad, a 200k+ mile 20+ year old trans? How much longer can that last?

It would only make sense if you got the trans for almost free, and did the swap yourself. Which is simple, with a lift you could probably do it in 3 hours if not less.

I just blew the front seal or the front pump in my 1989 560SEC. I had just purchased a used '87 560SEC tranny off Ebay near me for an unbelieveable low price(starting bid of $0.99) and I've talked to the seller and he bought it for his 560SEc that burn't up afterward and he never got it put in. Supposed to be great used one.
Then Friday Mine blew out.
What is the main difference in the '87 722.3(??) and my 722.350 tranny and will it swap in with out a problem. I understand that all the 722.3 series are the same 1:1final drive.

I do intend to do the swap myself and then rebuild my tranny at leisure, like a winter project.

I didn't mean to jack the thread.

I suspect the TC has a different stall speed, and the shift points will definately be different. No idea what else.

If he's reputable and will warranty it, seems like a good price. Be sure that you have the whole thing in writing, there will certainly be things broken/missing/needing repair along the way. Sometimes a price like this is just to lead you in, once the car is in parts the real bills start to pile up.

The difference to a rebuilt or reman is nice if you can afford and justify it, but when all is complete, you'll likely have the $1000 plus the reman and shipping. Doing it right is always preferred, but expensive.

On the original trans? Thats surprising must be a lot of highway. I'm at just over 270k on mine but its got one foot in the grave. My old SD needed one at like 125k.

Used parts are a crap shoot, who says the fluid was changed in this trans? Was it highway driven? Did some kid do 50 N drops with it before taking it to the junkers?

Thats a lot of money to spend on a trans that may fail in a year, who knows how much life it has left.
