engine mount heat shield?

I read one person's fix-it site where he mentioned replacing a heat shield that fit on top of an engine mount that also acts as a partial spill-guard for oil leaks. Does anyone know of this for an '84 300 SD? I am replacing mine and I see no heat shield.

Thank you.

Dan

They often get lost when the mounts are changed. They are more of a drip shield than a heat shield. When oil and diesel gets on the rubber mounts they go soft. I forgot to put mine on last time I did the motor mounts and only got 2 years out of them. Now I get to do the job again.

thank you - do you know where to purchase them? The Dealer was unaware of them, but maybe I called them the wrong thing - the Dealer thought they may be an aftermarket thing....

I also had no luck getting them from the dealer.

The ones I located at the parts yard had no part number on them.

Roy and Phil can get them, but they are not cheap. Usually on the w123, on was installed on the passenger side by the factory.

engine mount heat /drip shields 300 SD

Apparently they are called drip shields and have a p/n (for one side) of 126 241 0434 and a cost (from Phil) of $28.50 (Phil would have to order them, though). I also called my dealer with this info. They quoted me about $33 for one and they told me that the 84 300SD didn't have them originally. While somewhat determined to get these, I was going to order 2, but then was told that the other side was almost double the price! I decided to wait because I have to pay for them to have them shipped to the dealer.

My questions are:

1) Will these drip shields work/fit on the 84 300 SD?
2) Can I order 2 of the same, or do I need to pay to have one of each (that is, the cheaper one and the more expensive one)? If so, what is the difference?

Thanks!

My car has a different shield for the driver and passenger side. That being said the car is a 240D with a 300SD engine and 300D turbo engine mounts, so I do not remember which vehicle the shields are off of. I would just make a set out of some sheet metal, there is nothing too special about them.

Danny,

Pierre made some for my car out of some aluminum shaped with some tin snips and used the old mount and old shock to create the divit so it sat correct. Cost of replacement, $5 and some rustoleom to blend it into the black cavern of the engine compartment.

I do not see why one side would be different, since the mounts are the same.

engine mount heat shields

Thanks everyone. I bought some heet metal aluminum and some nice cutters for less than I would have paid for the 'real' shields. Aluminum can is a great idea, too.

Regarding the difference between left and right, one side may be more exposed to greater engine heat in some models? Just a guess.

I bought a couple last week at the dealer. On a 84 300D they are the same for both sides. 123-241-02-34 $26 each. list price $43.88 each.

Honestly, I bought them cause they are "proper" and "factory" for my car.

Practically, they dont work very well. Fluids actually bounce off the heatshield and onto the sides of the engine mount, lol. You would be better off taking some aluminum bendable pans and making an umbrella shaped plate for them that protects against heat and fluids. But that looks to "larry the cable guyish" for me.

heat shields for engine mount

Yes, Mine aren't looking all that pretty, but maybe they will be functional. Thank you for the reply.

They are different from side to side. They cover the mount and the angle is opposite on either side....

Which model are you talking about? The motor mounts are angled at maybe 40 degrees on both sides, the heatshield have to be angled too to protect it, but also to clear the engine shock absorbers. \ / kinda angle. But the part number is the same for both sides.
