Removing the windsheild

What is involved in removing the windsheild??

I had a welding accident today and a fire broke out. I was able to put it out but not until melted and cracked porption of the windsheild along with melting some of the dashboard and blowmotor assembly.

I'm pretty sure that you have a rubber gasket holding the window in. It is very difficult to remove a windshield leaving both the window and the gasket intact, so you usually sacrifice the one that you need to replace.

It's much easier to get the window out without damaging the gasket if you break it up first. You should tape paper up to catch the many bits of glass that this will produce in the interior of the car.

To sacrifice the seal in order to save the window, cut around it with a sharp knife and pull the rubber off. Then get behind the window with some cord to help break it loose.

If you push the window hard enough to disengage it from the old seal, you are very likely to break it. Thus you cut the seal to remove the window.

If it were my car, I would buy a new windshield and seal and cut the old seal from the old window, trashing both of them. You will find it much easier to install a window into a new seal.

Well the window is cracked and broken from the fire that broke out.

How much am I looking at??

I was thinking of getting a cheap donor car and replacing the parts that burned/melted and cracked with parts from the car.

Ive put to much money in the car to just junk it even though I may have to.

They usually have a 70% off sale for any reason (like solar flares or buttzits) and you can get a new one installed for under $200.
