Fixing rear center vent that won't close on an 85 300sd

Hi everyone,

I'm fairly new here -- had an 85 300SD for a couple years, but finally getting into some mini-projects on it (I'm new at the DIY thing but looking forward to it).

One of the things I've found on this car is that the rear center vent is stuck open, no matter what you do with the slider back there. I did a lot of searching, and the only thing I've found is that the control wire gets disconnected from the front of the console (where it controls the actual vent)... I had it all opened up a couple weeks ago (someone broke in and stole the stereo -- the silver lining is it's really easy to get back there and see what's going on now) and it looks like the wire is all hooked up properly... when I slide the back vent open or closed, I can see the plastic arm up front move up and down...

I'm thinking there are two possible things here: 1) I'm delusional and somehow it's still not hooked up properly, or 2) there's something else I should be considering

Any thoughts?

Are you speaking of the vent, at the rear of the center console?

Yes, this is the center vent that blows air to the back seat (nothing up front)... the slider doesn't shut off the air blowing back there -- even though it *looks* like everything is hooked up...

My vent does not blow air into back seat. Any info on how this thing works would be welcome.

An update on my rear vent woes... I took another look at this over the weekend, and it's definitely all hooked up -- when I work the back slider, I can see the arm up front move (and verified the nuts on either side of the vent "hoses" are moving too) -- so it really looks like it's all connected ok, but for some reason the actual blocks inside the hoses aren't closing.

Next step will be to look inside there... has anyone done this before? Any suggestions or hints?
