24.3 MPG Combined....
.... city/highway driving with the ac on 50% of the time on the 85D. Not bad. I be taking it on a 3-hour round trip this weekend and keeping an eye on hiway mileage. I'm planning on taking it on a 14 hour (one way) road trip pretty soon so I thought I'd test it on this short trip first.

Thats probably what I'd be getting if I had A/C.....but since I don't I've been getting about 26 to 29 depending how granny-like I drive and how much "hyper-miling" I am able to do.
![]() Its only been truly hot enough to want A/C maybe 4-5 days so far this year....and since I drive less than 30-40 mins a day, I'll survive. Its not worth $1500 to have (hopefully) available the 5-10 days a year you need it. Its much cheaper to keep the windows working properly...

I've been averaging 22 MPG on mixed driving with no AC. I'm at the point where I'm ready to rebuild my front end. It looks like a combination of feathering and cupping on the front tires. Maybe I just can't read the wear properly though. At any rate, I'm pretty sure that the worn out front end is costing me some fuel efficiency.

The last fill up I made was 26mpg also with A/C usage. I was surprised myself too. My current tank is near 1/4 mark so we'll see

You should be able to do the front end in a weekend if you can devote the both days to it.

Surprise at the pump
Like many of these cars my fuel gage is not working, so I employ a simple method of making sure I don't run out of fuel. If I purchase $20 in diesel, that gives me a little over 4 gallons (at current prices). I figure I'm getting about 25 MPG, so 4 gallons means I'm good for 100 miles right? I clear the trip meter after purchasing fuel and remember 100 miles. Well I had been going along like this all spring without problem. Then this last weekend I had to travel about 140 miles round trip, so I thought I should purchase a bit more fuel than I normally do. I stopped at the gas station and started pumping expecting to put in about $40. But then I started having problems with the pump, some don't like to run fast as the automatic shut off kicks in, I kept having to feather the handle to get the fuel to flow. That is until I heard the now unfamiliar sound of gurgling in the filler neck, then it hit me, the tank was full.
Thinking about it now I don't think I'm actually getting more than 25 MPG, but rather it must have been all of the tenths of a gallon that added up over time. But still a nice surprise, and then I could drive the next 350 miles without worry before I started the process all over again.

Why do it in 100 mile increments? My fuel gauge doesn't work very well but I do it in 450-475 mile increments. I fill it to the brim, and go to around 450...usually there's at least 3-4 gallons left in there when I fill at that point. Much longer time periods between visiting the fuel station, and less time spent standing filling the car....

I use a fuel credit card, saves me about $375 a year....in fact today I just got a free $100 fuel card because I have so many points.
![]() ![]() I filled up today (8.4gal) for $40....got 24.9mpg....100% city driving....not too bad.

yeah, but think of all the opportunities missed bragging about your benz in line at the pump! and it's all in my head, but putting 20.00 in is better than putting in 65 at fill up time...
