AC compressor hissing noise at idle

New to the board and I have to say this is the most useful tool I have found in working on my 300CD turbo diesel. Thanks for all the help!

Alright, the problem is that at idle or higher speeds at rest or on the road I get this hissing, metal scrapping, noise out of the compressor. I know it's the compressor because it's quiet as can be with the air on. The air blows nice and cool when I use it except when the clutch disengages. Any help would be much appreciated....

Thanks

year? Any oil in the compressor? R12 or R134? Use a oil checker and see if you have enough.

They make this little 1 time use things that you can buy from the auto store. All you do is press it on the low side R134 fitting.

Sorry, it's an 85. When I got the car the AC did not work, the reciever drier had almost rusted away. I replaced the drier and the proportion valve under the dash along with all of the O rings. Before installing the drier I put about 4 to 5 OZ of frigiquiet synthetic oil in it. After that I topped off the system with 2 cans of freeze 12 after pulling absolute vacuum(close as possible). Works great just a ittle noisy when AC is off.

The clue here is "Works great just a little noisy when the AC is off.
If it makes noise when the AC is off it sounds like the AC clutch bearing is shot.
I have never changed one but I have seen the bearings and they do not cost that much. Removing the AC compressor clutch will not mess with the internals of the compressor and no charge will be lost.
If you have a Delco compressore it will be item #6 in the pic on page #8.
