Possible purchase of a 82 SD Need Help Please ASAP
I would like your thoughts on this car. I have cut out most of the info and skipped to what I would think would be an issue
1982 SD 147,595 miles LOW MILEAGE FOR ITS AGE AND RUNS STRONG. I WOULD RECOMMEND A VALVE STEM SEAL REPLACEMENT AS THE CAR WILL SMOKE A BIT BUT THIS JOB CAN BE DONE FOR FIFTY DOLLARS IN PARTS AND AN AFTERNOON OF WORK. THE CAR MUST HAVE SOME WELDING ON THE FRONT CHASSIS BEFORE IT WILL BE ABLE TO BE PUT ON THE ROAD AND SINCE I DO NOT DO WELDING IS THE REASON I AM SELLING IT, I HIT A LARGE AND DEEP POTHOLE WHICH BROKE THE STEERING MOUNT ON THE CHASSIS... Does this seem like a big Job can it be done?? Also the smoking of the car is this a big issue?? I was wondering what it could be. Can a need for a valve Job do this? Also I'm going to look at this car with my friend and what are they dead ringer signs that it's burning Antifreeze or Oil?? I was guessing this is a reason it could be smoking? After asking some Vacuum questions I got into the Steering mount. This is what he said. "I work in the mechanical field, but know nothing of body work or welding, I am of the opinion that it would be best to go to a junkyard and cut out the section that has broken then weld the replacement part back in. I am thinking the metal must have been rotten to a degree for it to break like that but then we are talking about a 25+ yo car . I had a guy with a junked mercedes almost willing to do it for me but then he sold the whole car to a guy restoring his. Would have cost me 20 dollars. I will be home this weekend if you want to come by and take a look" FULL Description of his Ad I HAVE REPLACED AND REPAIRED MANY OF THE SUBTLE ANNOYANCES ASSOCIATED WITH THESE CARS. I HAVE REPLACED THE K-1 TRANSMISSION SERVO, REPLACED ALL THE HOSES,FUEL LINES ,FILTERS,TRUNK SEAL, TRANSMISSION PAN, TRANSMISSION FILTER AND GASKET, THE OIL PAN IS BRAND NEW AS WELL AS THE GASKET, I HAVE CHANGED ALL THE BRAKES AND REPLACED TWO CALIPERS, I HAVE REPLACED THE BATTERY, AND MOST OF THE ENGINE VACUUM FITTINGS. THE CAR HAS THE USUAL RUST ON THE FENDERS AND LOWER DOOR PANELS WHICH CAN BE REPAIRED. THE PAINT IS IN NICE CONDITION FOR A CAR OF THIS AGE AND THE INTERIOR IS IN VERY NICE CONDITION. ALL OF THE MOTORIZED WINDOWS WORK HOWEVER THE SUNROOF CLOSES SLOWLY AND NEEDS TO HAVE THE TRACKS CLEANED AND LUBED TO RESTORE FULL FINCTION. THE BLAUPUNCT RADIO WORKS HOWEVER THE ANTENNA DOES NOT FULLY RETRACT. THE CAR HAS VERY LOW MILEAGE FOR ITS AGE AND RUNS STRONG. I WOULD RECOMMEND A VALVE STEM SEAL REPLACEMENT AS THE CAR WILL SMOKE A BIT BUT THIS JOB CAN BE DONE FOR FIFTY DOLLARS IN PARTS AND AN AFTERNOON OF WORK. THE CAR MUST HAVE SOME WELDING ON THE FRONT CHASSIS BEFORE IT WILL BE ABLE TO BE PUT ON THE ROAD AND SINCE I DO NOT DO WELDING IS THE REASON I AM SELLING IT, I HIT A LARGE AND DEEP POTHOLE WHICH BROKE THE STEERING MOUNT ON THE CHASSIS....SO IF YOU CAN WELD OR HAVE A FRIEND MY LOSS IS YOUR GAIN. PLEASE NOTE THAT VEHICLE MUST BE PICKED UP I WILL NOT SHIP OR MAKE THOSE ARRANGEMENTS BUT WILL ASSIST WITH VEHICLE LOADING. CAR IS SOLD WHERE IS AS IS.
