Possible purchase of a 82 SD Need Help Please ASAP

I would like your thoughts on this car. I have cut out most of the info and skipped to what I would think would be an issue

1982 SD 147,595 miles

LOW MILEAGE FOR ITS AGE AND RUNS STRONG. I WOULD RECOMMEND A VALVE STEM SEAL REPLACEMENT AS THE CAR WILL SMOKE A BIT BUT THIS JOB CAN BE DONE FOR FIFTY DOLLARS IN PARTS AND AN AFTERNOON OF WORK. THE CAR MUST HAVE SOME WELDING ON THE FRONT CHASSIS BEFORE IT WILL BE ABLE TO BE PUT ON THE ROAD AND SINCE I DO NOT DO WELDING IS THE REASON I AM SELLING IT, I HIT A LARGE AND DEEP POTHOLE WHICH BROKE THE STEERING MOUNT ON THE CHASSIS...

Does this seem like a big Job can it be done??

Also the smoking of the car is this a big issue?? I was wondering what it could be. Can a need for a valve Job do this? Also I'm going to look at this car with my friend and what are they dead ringer signs that it's burning Antifreeze or Oil?? I was guessing this is a reason it could be smoking?

After asking some Vacuum questions I got into the Steering mount. This is what he said.

"I work in the mechanical field, but know nothing of body work or
welding, I am of the opinion that it would be best to go to a
junkyard and cut out the section that has broken then weld the
replacement part back in. I am thinking the metal must have been
rotten to a degree for it to break like that but then we are talking
about a 25+ yo car . I had a guy with a junked mercedes almost
willing to do it for me but then he sold the whole car to a guy
restoring his. Would have cost me 20 dollars. I will be home this
weekend if you want to come by and take a look"

FULL Description of his Ad

I HAVE REPLACED AND REPAIRED MANY OF THE SUBTLE ANNOYANCES ASSOCIATED WITH THESE CARS. I HAVE REPLACED THE K-1 TRANSMISSION SERVO, REPLACED ALL THE HOSES,FUEL LINES ,FILTERS,TRUNK SEAL, TRANSMISSION PAN, TRANSMISSION FILTER AND GASKET, THE OIL PAN IS BRAND NEW AS WELL AS THE GASKET, I HAVE CHANGED ALL THE BRAKES AND REPLACED TWO CALIPERS, I HAVE REPLACED THE BATTERY, AND MOST OF THE ENGINE VACUUM FITTINGS. THE CAR HAS THE USUAL RUST ON THE FENDERS AND LOWER DOOR PANELS WHICH CAN BE REPAIRED. THE PAINT IS IN NICE CONDITION FOR A CAR OF THIS AGE AND THE INTERIOR IS IN VERY NICE CONDITION. ALL OF THE MOTORIZED WINDOWS WORK HOWEVER THE SUNROOF CLOSES SLOWLY AND NEEDS TO HAVE THE TRACKS CLEANED AND LUBED TO RESTORE FULL FINCTION. THE BLAUPUNCT RADIO WORKS HOWEVER THE ANTENNA DOES NOT FULLY RETRACT. THE CAR HAS VERY LOW MILEAGE FOR ITS AGE AND RUNS STRONG. I WOULD RECOMMEND A VALVE STEM SEAL REPLACEMENT AS THE CAR WILL SMOKE A BIT BUT THIS JOB CAN BE DONE FOR FIFTY DOLLARS IN PARTS AND AN AFTERNOON OF WORK. THE CAR MUST HAVE SOME WELDING ON THE FRONT CHASSIS BEFORE IT WILL BE ABLE TO BE PUT ON THE ROAD AND SINCE I DO NOT DO WELDING IS THE REASON I AM SELLING IT, I HIT A LARGE AND DEEP POTHOLE WHICH BROKE THE STEERING MOUNT ON THE CHASSIS....SO IF YOU CAN WELD OR HAVE A FRIEND MY LOSS IS YOUR GAIN. PLEASE NOTE THAT VEHICLE MUST BE PICKED UP I WILL NOT SHIP OR MAKE THOSE ARRANGEMENTS BUT WILL ASSIST WITH VEHICLE LOADING. CAR IS SOLD WHERE IS AS IS.

No way I would buy that car. He's right, the chassis must be rusted and not worth the effort to repair.

ForcedInduction 07-08-2008 12:20 AM

I wouldn't buy that if he is asking more than $500.

As soon as Possible:) I only say that because were not sure how long this guy will hold this car.

Thanks guys, my friend has been looking at purchasing a Mercedes or a VW. He has found this Mercedes car at a good price and is interested.

If it isn't rusted that bad what would you guys think?

Uh, I know what it means. It was the application of the acronym I was referring to......;)

BTW, my old parts car Scar sounded like it was in better shape, and the rear bumper was up under the rear glass. Oh, and there was no engine or tranny. Yep, I'd take it first in a heart beat....

Don't walk from that car. Run!!

Do you think the suspension would break from hitting a pothole if the car was solid?

vstech 07-08-2008 01:44 AM

I have an 83 parts car that I would think is WAAAAY better than any car to fall apart from a pothole... however, I don't know how big the pothole was. are we talking missile crater, or normal dibit... ?
and don't hold the 147K to heart... the odo's are known for stopping, and EXTREMELY easy to swap.

EricSP 07-25-2008 03:53 PM

Ok guys well it's been sometime and my friend gave me a call, the guy selling the car still has it for sale. I KNOW!!!! for a reason.

My friend called the guy and said he can take it for $1,200 we are going today to look at it. I will take some pictures so I can post them this way you can see if it is the part that he thinks is broken or something else.

Also the oil pressure gauge is mechanical so it will give me a good indication if the motor has good compression?

The problem I think we will have is the car can not be driven so can I still use this as a indicator? I know with my car it pegs to the max when driving.

pwogaman 07-25-2008 04:17 PM

Run away!!!!

thesst 07-25-2008 04:27 PM

no the oil pressure gauge won't be a good measure of engine compression.

$1,200 for a car you have to do WELDING work on seems too much.

Offer $500. If he takes it, great, if not, offer $600. If he doesn't take it, walk away.

vstech 07-25-2008 04:32 PM

... you can have my 83 for 800, and I will meet you 1/2 way on a trailer!
run from that car for that price!

vstech 07-25-2008 04:34 PM

the oil pressure gauge is electrical.
compression requires removing all the glow plugs and running a test on each cylinder with a specialized diesel compression tester, about 50.00 at Harbor freight.
that car is worth AT MOST 800, if the drive train is magnificent as a donor vehicle for a good car.

vstech 07-25-2008 04:36 PM

I also have an 82 that is rust free and has a recent transmission rebuild the car has over 300K on it, odo stopped last year sometime, not sure of acutal mileage. the motor has some blowby, not bad though.
let me know...
bring a buddy with you, and meet me on the border of WV, and drive this home!
