You would do good to buy from a long time forum member. Run from the unknown and buy VSTECH's car.

... please don't pay more than 500.00 for this car... and only that much IF the motor has zero blowby, and the tranny shifts smoothly...
WOW that's a lot of rust. and in a VERY bad location

EricSP 07-26-2008 12:54 AM

When checking for Blowby what is the best method?

barry123400 07-26-2008 01:59 AM

If other areas are on the verge of breaking in simular fashion it is just a parts car. Car would have to go up on a hoist for a very carful rust inspection to be preformed. The bulk of the oxidation will be hidden under the undercoat in my opinion if there. It will take a little time to do that properly. My guess is it has more serious rust elsewhere. This breaking up was primarily rust related.

Turn on the engine. Let it warm up a bit (but not too much).

Take off the engine oil cap.

Observe how much "blowby" smoke comes out.

Look at those pics again and don't do something STUPID!!! That car at most is only a parts donor. Maybe you can use the engine in something else, but I bet it is all rusty and ugly too.
What on earth are you still doing messing with this car????
See first sentence......

2nd that. . .be sure to get a tetnus shot before beginning any work on that bucket, you're gonna need it...

EricSP 07-26-2008 10:50 AM

ROFL!! It's not been purchased

Guys listen he's my close friend and wants either a VW or a Mercedes. I am partial to Mercedes since I already have one. I would not consider it if it wasn't for the fact he has a friend who is a full time welder and it would be for free.

In the price range of $1,000-1,200 most 300's cars I see have no working A/C no Locks that work and interior that is destroyed. Even then they have body damage also.

If you guys can find me a $1,000 1,200 Mercedes 300D or SD and is within 1-2 hours of Orange County NY please let me know. We look on Craiglist and E-bay and the prices go through the roof before they end.

That's what you'd need to keep that car on the road.

TylerH860 07-27-2008 03:42 AM

You don't stand much of a chance finding a decent car for that price in your area. Rust belt, yada, yada, yada. Need I say more?

Perhaps a trip South is in order. Find one that's nice and sunbaked.

coonerboy 07-27-2008 10:23 AM

Here is one

He's asking $1250. It needs front calipers and he recommends it be towed. Looks like there might be a jerry rigged shut off under the steering column. I think he said the power windows dont work also but he believes its the switches. Might be worth looking at.

Thanks for the car link. I just sent my friend a E-mail on that car.

Hatterasguy 07-27-2008 01:21 PM

I can find nice MB diesels for that kind of money all day long. That thing is rusted worse than my 300SD which was a $500 car on a good day.

That car is worth about $250 which is about what a junk yard will give you if you can make it drive their. I would not pay a penny more than that, provided it has a good engine and some good parts.

Check the jack points, bet you they are soft.
