NJ/PA/NY Diesel meet?

I was thinking about this, I think it would be cool to check out eachothers cars and whatnot. Talk some diesel. I suppose it would be a saturday or sunday in the near future. Who would be interested and where do you live? I'm in central, NJ.

John

Question

I think we need everyone in this board who is close to the metro area, to reply to this post and figure out a destination, maybe a big park with a big parking area to park all our diesels or would that be bad for the environment. There should be a way to call someone to generate an event such like this one, we could probably make it into a big auto show, like an anniversary for all Mercedes Diesels. I know theres a lot of people in this board that has really old diesels and really new ones who would really like to compare power, where you take your car when it needs repair, and check out the differences of everyone's engines. I think the best places would be shea stadium (I know a person that works there so I can ask her if it would be possible since they do have events in the parking area), The meadow lands, or Belmont park that is in Long island has had a lot of car shows (I also know someone that works there.) I'm very interested in doing something like this I'm going to ask some people if this could be made possible. And we will try to set a date, hopefully a day that's not snowing we want to make it back home with our diesels. Who knows if we do get enough people to come, maybe we will be on TV or something. I would advertise it in the newspaper anyone who owns a Mercedes diesel call whatever number to attend the event. The bigger the event the better, we could also make a contest who has the most well cared Benz according to year. I would put all the 123,s together starting from the earliest year to the latest and so on, 116, 124 etc. I hope you guys get a little hyped up after reading this, I know you guys must have tons of ideas. We could all donate a certain amount of money to get trophies or what not, I don't know we could make this event a whole lot of fun, and learn a thing or two.

All this sounds great... I want to do it... Maybe we can rent Raceway Park in E-town and do a drag! Nah, just kidding, but it would be fun! Every model has its own sub-culture meets, especially the SLs and M100s (6.3s, 600s, and 6.9s, they meet in Woxall PA at Karl Middleauve's place) and I think the diesel benz (slowly extinct) is deserving of an event. I would like to see t-shirts (possibly evoking that old blue and white MB Service Theme from the 70's and 80's) and eventually grill badges. I know the M100 Group has badges. But I'm all for it. Please, let me know if there is anything I can do. I was thinking maybe meeting at a hotel/conference center, stadium or maybe state park! But I don't think any state park would endorse a diesel... Just kidding.

Almost forgot

Maybe we can speak with some independent service spots/dealers who specialize in old diesels. I know of about 5 in the area that may be interested in attending. It would be good publicity for them and also help us with tech help and the like. Some of the shops near me are Ramsey Motor Cars, and Bell's Service. They see a lot of old diesels. Also, I know a lot of MB Dealer foremans have a sore spot for the diesels, it may be worth ask them.

Count me in, and probably my neighbor. He also owns a 1980 300SD. His was built in Nov. '79, mine was built in April of '80. We are both in the Air Force and are stationed at McGuire AFB, exit 7 off the N.J. turnpike (Bordentown). I think if we were all to meet somewhere like a park, "pedestrians" would gravitated towards us and it would turn into a make shift car show. I figure somewhere north east of here would be a good location, since it would be the middle of the state. How about Freehold, maybe the Freehold Mall. It is located right of Rt. 537near Rt. 9. If you look at a map, Freehold is about 9 miles North of Rt. 195. Just an idea.

yeah, we have to do this.... From the sounds of it, a lot of you aren't too far from me. I'm telling ya, we should do this at Raceway Park in Englishtown... I'm a club memeber, so maybe I can post an inquire or something. Please, let me know. The show should be limited to all OM block powered cars, 1936-1999. But I would like to see a lot of newer classics, W116s, W123s, and the like. I'm excited, lets get a date together. Any weekend in October is good...

OK lets make this happen.

I know of a county park near me that has great parking and it is not crowded. It is in bound brook, NJ.

Englishtown is a good idea, good parking and other happenings there, only problem is its like $12 per person to get in for the day, I dont know about you guys but i'm cheap.

Im open to travel anywhere reasonable. Lets pick a spot in the center where everyone will be coming from.

John

Well, so far it appears we have all Northern Jersey owners, except for myself and two from NY. I have a map of N.J. in front of me, plotting out where everyone is located. There are 2 people in Sussex county, which is really in Northern N.J. One person out near New Rochelle, N.Y.. Turbodiesel is in Bound Brook which is just Northwest of Edison N.J. One person from Queens N.Y. and my self, down in South central N.J. Looking at the map there appears to be a large receration area called Round Valley, that is near a very large lake. Large enough to be on a map at least. It is located in the middle of 3 towns, Lebanon, Allerton, and White House Station. It is off state route 629 which is off of interstate Rt. 78. If you were to look at a map, it is right in the middle of Bound Brook and the N.J./P.A. state line.
Turbodiesel, are you familar with this park, or is this the one you were mentioning?
I am not familar with the area, and it is quite a drive for me, just to do a quick look over as a potential sight. The easiest thing to do would be to meet at a public place like this Round Valley, versus a mall parking lot. Businesses tend to frown upon non-customers taking up space in their lots. A whole group of Benzes taking up a corner of the parking lot, would get mall security all worked up. If this Round Valley is on a map, then it must be fairly large. Again, just an idea.

Yes, I know where round valley is, they have a large lake there, but I have never been. Perhaps I will go there tommorow and check it out, its off RT.22, where you said, near Lebanon and Whitehouse Station, easy access from 78. Got any more ideas?

I'll have to give it some more thought. First, a suitable location needs to be established. If you don't mind, if you could scope out this Round Valley and see what is there, and if there is a place for us to gather. You know, now that I think more about it, I may of been near this place. My wife and I took a drive up that way and I remember driving near a big lake and the surounding town. I remember seeing a rec. area with a boat launch area and such. Of course this was only one part of this lake.
With Fall coming, it ought to be nice in those hills. I am originally from C.T. and rolling hills of every color in the Fall, makes for nice scenery.
