alternator removal
I have a 1983 300SD. I have the air intake tube off and can see, but not sure how to get the alternator off. I have the bottom bolt undone and wiring harness off. The top has what I think is a long tensioner screw pushing on a bracket. This is my problem.
Thanks for any input. |

The screw is 90 degrees to the bolt and allows you to tension that bolt when you turn the nut on the end of the screw. So, to remove the bolt/screw, you've got to free the screw section from the fork that sits behind the nut. This may require bending the fork slightly. Once it's free, the screw/bolt will move forward and come out of the alternator. It might be difficult to move it forward if it's been there awhile. Some persuasion from the rear might be required. Here is what that bolt/screw looks like: http://catalog.peachparts.com/RenderScriptTemplate.epc?_cmd=epccat_VehicleAAA&cookieID=2GJ0WCJ992GJ0WD5CC&yearid=1983%40%401983&makeid=MB%40%40MB%40%40X&modelid=300%2DSD%2D002%40%40300SD&catid=F%40%40Engine+Electrical&mode=PA&subcatid=F4001@@Alternator+Adj%2E+Bolt&source=www.peachparts.com&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop |

Agree ^^ there are three bolts to loosen/remove, it's a bit of a pain, but take your time.
