AC lines icing up

Should I be concerned than my AC lines (the low pressure one in front of the valve cover and the segment going to the compressor) have ice on them after the AC has been running a while?

Does that mean I have too much refrigerant in the system (I put in 2.6 lbs R12 per instructions on the front of the engine compartment)

That could suggest a problem with the evaporator temp regulator. Have you noticed any reduction in cabin ventilation air flow while the system runs, as would occur if the evaporator was freezing?

Its normal. That line should have insulation on it to boost efficiency.

@tangofox
No it's cooooold. Family drove to Austin (2 hour highway drive) and the outside temp was around 92. Inside, we had dialed the temp wheel down 24-26C(just at the top of the red bar) and had the fan on auto and were still on the chilly side.

The only thing is that sometimes it takes a while for the compressor to engage after startup. It comes on sometime after I leave my neighborhood, like 1-2 miles on residential streets. Maybe 5-min after startup?

But so far it ALWAYS comes on

EDIT: Come to think of it, there is a sort of whistling that I had always thought was the expansion valve. It will kind of chirp/whistle/creak for a little while, then cut off. It seems to come from the area of the expansion valve, but I haven't closely investigated it. But no obvious reduction in airflow unless the temp gets low enough to trip the CCU off.

@turbobenz
There is insulation on the line (aging, but still covering most of the line), but there is alot of ice on the exposed parts.

P.S. we went to my cousin's new house, and the neighbor across the street has a brown w116 (drool). Rough interior, but a straight, rust-free exterior, not driven in a little while.....I told my cousin that if they find out the owners want to give it away to have them call me

Icing of the suction side line indicates low charge, not over charge.
