Stutters at Idle
My 300sdl stutters and doesn't have a steady rpm at idle...
Does it hot and cold, any insight? |

i'll take a look at that..
seems to be very sluggish, and slow(has always been like that since she was mine) maybe its got clogged up fuel lines? clogged tank strainer? |

car also doesnt smoke... is that a sign of not getting enough fuel?
how should an 87 300SDL smoke? My girlfriends 300CD smokes much more and is way faster |

SDL should not smoke much at all if properly tuned. If its sputtering at idle it might be the auto-idle-control set too low or not functioning properly. What is your rpm at idle?
617's can run at amazingly low idle, I have mine set to 550 currently and it does perfectly fine....smooth and quiet, no sputtering or stalling at all. I guess the 603 is not so capable.

looking at it, i can see that the rpms actually shoot up when it does this... not bog down

Huh, perhaps the idle control is not working properly and the idle is fluctuating or it is trying to compensate by raising it.....

look a the fuel level in your primary filter (the clear bubbly one). If you have a LARGE air pocket, something might be up, like the tank strainer or other anomaly. A small air bubble should be present.
another Item is the primer pump. Make sure it is tightened down well... even if it is it can still go sour and let air into the system. Might be a nice idea to vent your fuel system. |

No primer pump, it is an '87.
Shouldn't have visible smoke, even flat-out.

My 86SDL has the primer pump, did it discontinue in 87? Shawn

Quote:
My 86 doesn't have a pump, and the owners manual explicitly says that the repriming procedure for the engine is to hold the starter for up to 60 seconds until the system is bled. |

All I know is I can pump the end that goes to the clear fuel filter. It doesn't unscrew. Shawn

ggspeed..
did you figure out what the issue was at all. I'm having some intermittent rough/low idle here and there with new filters, no air leaks as far as i can tell. If i step on the pedal once the engine rpms get over 2k then the needle jumps up and reponds.. sometimes will then stay at a nice idle and sometimes it just drops back to zero.. don't think its the OVP relay either.. looks very new
