all w124 headlights interchangeable?

Newbie here again,
I noticed on eBay and other sites that they usually only list the 300E when browsing through the headlights (or headlight doors) when I put w124 in the search. I'm hoping to upgrade my 92 300d headlights to something slightly more modern looking because mine are dried and faded. I see some listed for the 300E that I really like but I was wondering if they are interchangeable?

If they are not the same, can anyone suggest some sources for headlights for a 1992 300D w124 body that have a nicer look? Maybe mine are considered the American headlights...the headlights are seperate from the parking lights with no plastic cover lense over both lights...it only covers the parking lights.

Thanks in advance for help!

They physically interchange but 94-95 headlights that are meant to go with the later style hood have cosmetically different fog light lens fluting that doesn't look quite right with the earlier style hood.

I'm not a fan of the quality of TYC brand Euro headlights but they provide better lighting than early DOT headlights.

The ultimate upgrade is 500E/E500 headlights but good luck finding a cheap set of those.

Yes 300E and 300D are the same. As mentioned, the '94/'95 are slightly different as the hood lays over the corner of the light.

Hmmmm. I'm not sure if I can spot the differences on these ebay lights. I am interested in lights such as these :
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/86-95-93-MERCEDES-W124-300E-400E-500E-HEADLIGHTS-CORNER_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1205Q7c39Q3a1Q7c66Q3a1Q7c65Q3a12Q7c240Q3a1318QQ_trksidZp3286 Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem150300669673QQitemZ150300669673

They don't really mention if they will be an exact fit for my 92 300D Turbo w124. Any guesses? Are these for the newer hood that you mentioned will not work? I hope it is OK that I posted that link...if not just say so and I'll delete it.
Thanks in advance.

The will fit. They will look a little goofy because the inner upper corners of the lamps which are hidden with the newer hood will be exposed with the older hood. Only someone with a keen eye will notice.

Thanks sixto.
Are there any aftermarket light doors or complete replacement lights that are a perfect replacement fit and have a different look than OEM?

Any suggestions or pictures of members cars with upgraded replacements would be great. I definitely wouldn't want the gap showing that you mentioned but I would like to get away from the factory look on my 92 lights. In my humble opinion, the headlights are its weakest cosmetic point and mine are sunburned/dried out anyway.

There's no gap. Note how the lens continues to form a corner while the reflector follows the contour of the hood.

This is my car with TYC replica Euro headlights -

I've since replaced the panels with headlight wiper holes with plain panels and aligned the driver side headlight.

It's a distant picture but iwrock has OE (Hella?) headlights vs my cheapo reproductions. You can see the quality difference when the cars are side-by-side.

I have Hella's on my wagon. I am still trying to figure out the difference.

The Depos and TYCs are great lights.

The Depos I had on the SDL were very well made. The TYCs on the 300D are poorly made - the brackets that hold the reflectors are flimsy and don't hold adjustment well, the lenses don't seal well against the housings, etc.

TYC lenses have different fluting that your Hellas but I don't know if that means a significant difference in beam. There is a very distinct Z pattern to the TYC beams as I expect from Hellas.

I like the look of your 87 300D lights...that would be a big improvement over my old crusty dried up lights. I don't think the fit looks bad whatsoever. I see what your saying about the headlights not matching up perfectly with the hood, but the curve on the top of the lights make it looks great.
