removing down pipe
I am changing the down pipe on the exhaust, from the turbo to under the car.
Any tricks to getting this out? and how high do I have to jack the car up? thanks

I usually put it up on ramps in front. Undo the two bolts connecting it to the rest of the exhaust system, undo the two bolts on the u-clamp by the transmission, and undo the three copper nuts on the studs at the back of the turbo (a real pain to get at). Then gently lower and wiggle it out of there. Installation is reverse of that. Its really not all that bad.

I had to remove mine a few times for other repairs.Its very easy. You can set the car up on ramps and you will be just fine.Three bolts holds the pipe at the turbo and three more down at the flange,you will notice that all 6 of these bolts are brass,makes it easier to remove,no need to heat them before removal.
You will want some help holding the collar to the turbo when you put it all back together,it has a tendency to want to fall back down the pipe. Good luck Dan

My next repair is to replace the exhaust system. I would like to order new copper nuts, but have no idea what size they are. ( no clue with metric ) Also, does this pipe have donut-like gaskets at each end? I would like to have all parts on hand before starting.

One thing to remember when removing the pipe, is the flex joint. If you are replacing the pipe don`t worry about it. but removing and installing the same pipe, if it is old. be careful of the joint from cracking.
I use a brass drift to whack the edge of the pipe at the turbo once the three nuts and color are removed. It can be on there pretty tight sometimes. Just follow the directions as stated above. I had a new down pipe give me trouble lining it up. the joint under the floor would leak where the two long bolts hold it together. seemed the angle from the trans mount to that joint was tweeked some. so I loosened everything up, turbo, trans mount and loosened the joint, and left the rubber donuts holding the rear up. Tightened the connection where the flange and two long bolts hold the sections first. then tightened the turbo connection, and last the trans mount. seem to not leak now. was a PITA for a while getting it all to line up.
