I broke it...am I in trouble? OM606 question

I had some leaking return lines on my rear injectors and when working on them I broke an elbow that is part of the EGR system. It is the elbow that exits the round thing(EGR valve?) under the false valve cover. It leads from the back of the round thing into the top of the valve cover. Now my recirculated exhaust gases are going to be released under the false cover instead of being directed into the intake. Can the car be driven until I replace the part? Or does it need to be parked? I'm assuming at the least I will have a mess under the false cover if I drive it and probably trip a CEL.

If you were replacing fuel return lines, I believe you're looking at the CCV system, not EGR.

I'd go in and replace ALL the elbows and plastic bits that are part of that system. Only a couple of bucks, and as you've discovered, they become hard and brittle with age and like to crack / crumble as soon as you touch them.

It's only oil vapors, won't hurt anything to drive it around like that. It will leave an oily residue under the cover tho.

Thanks Lupin, thats good to know. But now I have another problem... While trying to remove the old part some of it broke off and fell inside. It was broken flush with the valve cover and I got about a third of the ring out but the rest fell inside. I guess now I need to remove the valve cover and get that piece out? Do all the injector lines have to come off to open the valve cover enough to get to the piece that fell?

You arent the first to have doen that. Search and see what others have done to extract the bits of plastic.

replacing all of those fittings will cost you more than a couple of bucks. Phil went through all of the part numbers and made up a set.

Put a bb in the line that goes to the egr, your engine will thank you.

Can't find anything on getting the broken plastic part out from under the valve cover. I guess my only choices are to run it and risk it or remove the valve cover and injector lines to get it out. Any other options?

It will thank him with a malfunction indicator lamp. There is a way to defeat it on the turbo 606, but it's slightly more complex than just cutting off the vacuum to the valve.

I would not run it until I knew that the pieces were out, even if that meant removing the valve cover. A piece of it could eventually work its way past the oil pump pickup screen.

As it stands right now it can't be far from the hole it fell out of. The car hasn't been moved or started. In the morning I'll go at it with a bright flashlight and a pair of long tweezers and see if I can fish it out. Wish me luck...
